Suleskarvegen Road

Travelled: 277km, 1 ferry from Oanes to Lauvvik (6.5m 213nok -192+16 senior), 1 toll 48nok
Stay: Rauland, Totak Lake on R38, picnic area, bins and tables, 59.6657 8.0576

We did a fair bit of driving today as we make our way Northeast towards Oslo. We decided to follow the Suleskarvegen scenic route. The start of our journey required, possibly our last ferry crossing in Norway from Oanes to Lauvvik.

We then had a detour as the road was closed and later we had to wait to follow a convoy to Byrkjedal.

Unfortunately, due to this, we were unable to stop to have a closer look at the Gloppedalsura scree formed 10,000 years ago as the ice melted making the boulders tumbled down.

We then had a toll at Ovstabo before turning at Sinnes to take the road over the alpine plateau. There were still patches of snow and beautiful views as well as plenty of sheep.

There was a great rest stop with toilets near the dam wall (59.2306, 7.53126) but too early for us to stay.

We continued on and turned left at R9, stopping at a beautiful picnic area and swimming hole on the Otra River, just past Valle (59.2306, 7.53126).

Our next destination was Dalen, which lies at the end of the Telemark Canal, built in 1861/91. Unfortunately the canal was south from us and we needed to keep going north...we admired the grand wooden hotel before heading off once more towards Rjukan.

As it was getting late in the day we decided to stop 50km short of our destination at a lovely picnic spot on the Totak Lake.

  1. Hi Guys, Have been reading your blog with interest. We haven't been to Norway since 1979. We must put it on our list for a trip in our motorhome. Love all the photos, keep up the good work. Makes us jealous as our next trip does not start until September. Safe travels Ewout and Jenny

    1. Great to hear from you. Norway has not disappointed. We especially love the ability to wild camp and the free spots. There is still so much we haven't managed to see. Got to leave something for next time. Looking forward to following your adventures that we're sure will make us envious as we will be back home by then! All the best to you both. Cheers!
